PRESS RELEASE

Peter Kilfoyle MP for Liverpool Walton
18th February 2008
Nicaragua Charity Trek

Peter Kilfoyle, the Member of Parliament for Liverpool Walton, today announced the final amount raised by his charity trek across Nicaragua.

“I am knocked out by the generosity shown by supporters of the trek.   They contributed a magnificent £36,658.50, which has been split between the British Heart Foundation, and the Peace and Hope Trust”, said Peter.
The British Heart Foundation is a well known charity, whilst the Peace and Hope Trust works among the most impoverished people in Nicaragua.

Peter Kilfoyle went on to say –
“Those tremendous donors can be assured that their money is already being put to good use.  I am certain that the benefits of their kindness will be much appreciated by people both here at home, and on the desperately poor east coast of Nicaragua.”

“It’s fantastic that Peter is undertaking this challenge to raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). We are delighted to be benefiting from his amazing efforts which will help fight heart disease.

The BHF relies on money raised by people like Peter to be able to continue its life-saving work funding pioneering research, vital information and patient care.

Walking from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast is an amazing feat and we wish Peter and his team the very best of luck with the trek and their fundraising.”

NICARAGUAN WALK
Charity Trek - September 2007

Last year, I had a heart attack, followed by a quadruple bypass operation.  I resolved to do what I could to get back on my feet and to help others to avoid a similar fate.

This September, I am walking the breadth of Nicaragua – from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast.  In this way, I hope to show that heart attacks and operations do not have to mean an invalidity.  On the contrary, they can be a second chance to a healthier, more fruitful life.

I also hope to raise funds for two charities close to my heart, literally and metaphorically.  One is the British Heart Foundation and the other is the Peace and Hope Trust (working with some of the most impoverished people in the Americas).  If you would make a donation, the details of how to do so are below.

The walk will take me 140 miles from coast to coast, across the mountains on the west of Nicaragua and through the rainforest of the east (the picture on the right shows a typical stretch of the route).  It will be much easier in the knowledge that a lot of people are giving their support!

Peter was delighted to accept a cheque from Barlows County Primary School.

He invited schools in his constituency to offer a donation towards the 140 mile coast-to-coast walk and Barlows Primary School responded within days.

Peter called into the Fazakerley school last week to say thank you and receive the kind donation.  He met with a warm welcome and – appropriately enough, given the trek is set to be a physically challenging one - joined the reception class as they ‘worked out’ as part of a special “Keep fit” day.

“I can’t thank the school enough for their encouragement and their contribution,” said Peter.  “It’s a busy time of the academic year and schools have many fund-raising priorities but the staff and pupils at Barlows still went to the trouble to raise a fine contribution and I appreciate that immensely.”

Peter added:  “Other schools in the constituency have pledged their support.  I look forward to receiving any additional donations and thanking them personally.  It’s all in a very good cause.”

The Peace and Hope Trust works closely with severely deprived Nicaraguan children who receive little or no formal schooling.

Hats off to the Tarbuck-esque Liverpool MP Peter Kilfoyle . The popular Labour backbencher will be embarking on a 140-mile trek through the tropical rainforests and mountainous terrains of Nicaragua this September.

Kilfoyle, who underwent heart surgery last summer, is attempting to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. So far, I hear he’s already managed to gather £20,000.

"After my heart attack and quadruple bypass operation I resolved to do what I could to get back on my feet and help others avoid a similar fate,” he says. “I hope to show that heart attacks can be a second chance for a healthier, more fruitful life.”

Best of luck.

ABOUT THE WALK

After Haiti, Nicaragua is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  It is also the largest country in Central America, with the Pacific Ocean on its western edge and the Caribbean bordering its eastern shores.

The team consists of six people – our guide Peter Coleman, who is the Nicaraguan Project chief for the Peace and Hope Trust;  Jonathan Allan, an experienced freelance cameraman;  my colleague Greg Pope MP;  my son Patrick Kilfoyle;  my son-in-law Jon Gill, a male nurse (just in case!); and myself.

The trek will be hot and humid, but in aid of two excellent causes – both registered charities.  They are the British Heart Foundation (reg. charity no. 225971) and the Peace and Hope Trust (reg. charity no. 1058728).  The beneficiaries will be the increasing numbers of our fellow British citizens who suffer from heart disease and the deprived English-speaking people of the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua.  Help me to help them – with your assistance, we can make a real difference to these first-rate organisations and the work which they do.
